The emerging of fake DVD copies from Korea in the Philippines still the problem of the country for how many years. The recent years were noticeable that the profit of Philippine movie is decreasing. Many independent producers are risking their money just to produce a quality film but still viewers choose to buy pirated DVD’s. Who would like to go to mall and watch a movie for hundred fifty bucks if they could buy a DVD copy for only fifty pesos? Other advantage of pirated copies is that they can release the movie even if it still not showing. The faster they reach the viewers the more they are in demand. In addition, as the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) is fastly approaching and many films are made for the viewers to be entertained, could it help the Philippine movie industry brings back the interest of the viewers?
Aside from pirated DVD’s they are now pirating some software of Microsoft and other application, which they use in their office or in private use.
The Optical Media Board headed by the newly appointed action star Ronnie Rickets with the cooperation of National bureau of Investigation and the Philippine National Police took an enforcement action and randomly visited different establishments along Ayala Avenue and Makati as part of their campaign in piracy and as a warning to those who are using unlicensed software’s. “This Educational outreach aims to get business owners guilty of copyright infringement to legalize any unlicensed software that they have. Software is indispensible to any organization nowadays. We use it as our productivity tool. The sad part is, big companies who can afford to purchase licensed software are taking advantage of rampant piracy to cut down costs,” said Atty. Rosendo Meneses the executive director of the Optical Media board.
Since the start of 2010, the Pilipinas Anti-Piracy Team conducted many raid against business establishments involved in the use and selling of pirated and unlicensed software and has seized computers loaded with pirated and unlicensed software as well as pirated installer’s software installers amounting to more than 67 million pesos. Nine (9) of these raids were in Makati , five (5) were in Pasig , three (3) were in Quezon City and three (3) were in Rizal province.
A month ago, The OMB sent letters to the president and CEO’s of corporations alerting them on the criminal sanctions of copyright infringement. The letter serves as a reminder to the companies to comply with the law before any member of the agency of the PAPT conducts law activities. “It is about time that companies realize that this genuine movement against software piracy continues to hamper the growth of the IT sector and the compliance of corporations and big business
establishments to the intellectual property rights. Law will play a big part in our economic recovery,” added Atty. Meneses.
The OMB said that software piracy is one of the major inhibitors’ to the growth of the local IT industry in the Philippines . Software piracy is punishable under the IP code of the Philippines . Those found guilty could face up to nine years imprisonment and a fine of up to 1.5 million pesos.
